Transition Into the World of Technical Diving

The PADI Tec 40 course is your first real step into technical diving. It’s designed for divers who are ready to move beyond recreational no-stop limits and begin exploring the world of decompression diving.

This course is a natural progression from PADI Tec Basics, but it can also serve as your first tec diving certification. Tec 40 bridges the gap between recreational diving and more advanced technical training, giving you the confidence, knowledge, and practical experience to safely extend your limits.

Course Overview

The PADI Tec 40 course consists of:

  • Seven knowledge development sections – covering decompression theory, gas planning, equipment, and problem management
  • Four practical application sessions – workshops to practice equipment setup, configuration, and dry skills
  • Four open-water training dives – progressively introducing staged decompression and team diving techniques

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Qualify to make limited decompression dives to 40 metres / 130 feet
  • Use up to 50% oxygen (EANx50) as a decompression gas
  • Gain hands-on experience managing technical gear and dive planning software
  • Build strong team diving and emergency management skills

You Will Learn How To

  • Plan and execute limited decompression dives using technical procedures
  • Configure and manage double-tank systems with stage/deco cylinders
  • Apply gas management strategies to ensure safety and efficiency
  • Use decompression software and dive computers for planning and monitoring
  • Handle equipment failures, gas issues, and emergency scenarios as a team
  • Develop the mindset and situational awareness required for technical diving
